You’ve booked your headshot or branding session (yay!), and now the big question hits:
“What in the world am I going to wear?”
You’re not alone—this is the most common question I get from clients before a shoot. And listen, I get it. You want to look amazing, feel like yourself, and still show up like the boss you are. The good news? You don’t need a stylist or a fancy wardrobe—just a little strategy and a whole lot of you.
As a personal branding and headshot photographer based in Dallas-Fort Worth (and available nationwide), I’m sharing what really matters when it comes to getting dressed for your session.
1. Start With Your Brand Vibe
Before you pull anything from your closet, take a breath and think about the energy you want to show the world. Are you bold and powerful? Creative and fun? Classic and polished?
Your outfit should support that energy—not fight it. Your branding or headshot session is your chance to show the world who you are before you even say a word.
Pro tip: Scroll through your own IG or LinkedIn. Notice the colors and styles you naturally gravitate toward—that’s your brand showing up already.
2. Stick to Solid Colors & Clean Lines
Look, I love a good pattern—but the camera doesn’t always.
Solid colors and clean silhouettes tend to photograph best and keep the focus on your face (not your outfit). Neutrals are always safe, but if a pop of color speaks to your brand, go for it.
Pro tip: Bring a mix—maybe one polished look, one casual, and one that feels creative or playful. It gives you range without the stress.
3. Fit Is Everything
You don’t have to wear a suit to look sharp—but your clothes do need to fit you well.
Baggy clothes can swallow you on camera, and too-tight clothes can make you feel self-conscious. And here’s my real talk for the day:
Stop worrying about what number is on the tag.
If it fits and makes you feel confident, that’s all that matters. The camera loves a good fit, not a specific size.
Pro tip: Try your outfits on a few days before. Move around, sit down, lift your arms—make sure it feels good in real life and on camera.
4. Accessorize with Intention
A little detail can go a long way—like a bold earring, a signature necklace, or a sleek watch. Just don’t overdo it. You want your face and your vibe to shine first.
Pro tip: If you wear glasses regularly, wear them! You want to look like you—not a polished stranger.
5. Hair, Makeup, and Grooming Count
This doesn’t mean glam if that’s not your thing, but your headshot or branding session deserves some attention to the details. A little polish goes a long way—think smooth edges, clean nails, a touch of powder or lip color if you wear makeup.
Pro tip: If a little extra pampering boosts your confidence, go for it. If not, come as your best everyday self. Either way—we’ll capture the version of you that feels most powerful.
Bonus: Bring a Backup Outfit (or Two)
Even the best outfit can fall flat if you’re not feeling it that day. Give yourself options! I always review outfits with my clients at the start of the session to make sure we’re aligned and you feel great.
Final Thoughts
Your headshot or personal branding session isn’t just about looking good—it’s about showing up as the version of you the world needs to see. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be prepared, confident, and ready to be seen.
And guess what? You already are.
